Right now my desktop PC is taking a long painful crap. Right after I bought the iPhone 5s. So as most of the population knows those aren't conducive to a budget normally but I wanted to treat both Paul and I to something extravagant. <br />
<br />
Initially it was just my hard drive, thats cool, I got a new one from newegg.com. I get the harddrive and realize that I didn't get an SATA cable. *SIGH* Order a cable from newegg.com (and some more RAM). Get the cable, get the RAM, Desktop seems to be fine for about two or three days. BAM. another windows boot error. <insert cursing="" hair="" pulling="" stuff="" throwing=""> So I'm working on that one.</insert><br />
<br />
Regardless, all my pictures and wedding stuff is on that computer, now I'm working with my faithful laptop. (Toshiba man, the best bloody laptops anyone could buy ever-it hasn't ever given me the slightest difficulty ever).<br />
<br />
SOOOOooo needless to say, I'm not going to be updating anything wedding related anytime soon.<br />
<br />
I did get my butt in gear and put a bunch of restoration and architectural pieces in my etsy shop. The most beautiful Art Nouveau bathroom hardware pieces I've ever seen! <br />
<br />
It inspired me to start a whole new section "Architectural Antiques"<br />
<br />

Its going to be an interesting couple of weeks. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
June 1, 2013 I finally got married! I'm so very happy I waited until I was absolutely sure I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my partner, because I will never EVER throw another wedding as long as I live. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TWd07tsKGPs/Uhj39DCeK6I/AAAAAAAABBw/t_GwLVTM8qs/s400/paul&alexiswedding006.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Our candy buffet, this particular dish cost $2.00, the scoop was another $2.50 - by far, the most expensive glassware at my wedding ;)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The entire wedding was beautiful. It was not over the top - I didn't feel like hauling a ton of antique and vintage sofas, chairs, and other huge oddments, but I wanted the flea market feel. So I just incorporated stuff into the wedding decorations kind of subtlety. </div>
<br />
I love antiques, reading and my garden. Paul has similar
interests - he loves poking around in antique shops and flea markets -
not pictured are the tons of old reels, lures and other fishing related
items that were scattered around.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QdJJfGZXNi8/Uhj4Blr8nLI/AAAAAAAABB8/8Y66FtRoluc/s1600/paul&alexiswedding017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QdJJfGZXNi8/Uhj4Blr8nLI/AAAAAAAABB8/8Y66FtRoluc/s640/paul&alexiswedding017.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Doilies were handmade by my grandmother YEARS ago, the scrapbook paper was $5. on a clearance pile at Joann Fabrics, the books - scavenged through the years - I love to read. Photo Frame was from the Dollar Tree.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3>
So here are my suggestions and tips </h3>
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>1.</b></span> <b><span style="font-weight: normal;">Do Not </span></b>bother with thousands of dollars in decorations. Just be simple and subtle and most importantly, reflect you and your fiances true selves. Use the "Theme" as a way to spend LESS money, not more.<br />
THE WRONG WAY TO USE A THEME:<br />
<b><span style="color: magenta;">Bride to be</span>:</b> "OOoo, Calla Lily themed stuff! And it all matches!" and she promptly throws her wallet at the florist, caterer, Oriental Trading Company.<br />
<br />
Is that calla lily theme attractive to you because you absolutely love and adore calla lilies? Do you have a garden full of them? Do you go to flower shows to see them? Do you spend hours caring for your lilies? no? Well, why choose calla lilies then?! <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">2.</span> G</b>o to garage sales, auctions, flea markets and discount stores <u>with</u> your fiance, let him have a say in whats going on. Drag him to the craft stores too, then you can both commiserate over coffee later. Bridesmaids are fun of course, but you aren't marrying your bridesmaids. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">3. </span>B</b>rowse craigslist frequently. Don't forget about places like oncewed, weddingbee and other secondhand places.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">4. </span>U</b>tilize and Exploit any family and friends with any sort of talent! Crafty friends are AWESOME. Don't forget your family members. An insane and costly part of the wedding is the CAKE. My best friend and bridesmaid made me a lovely three tier wedding cake - it was her gift. My sister is the craft queen, my mom can do just about anything, and my mother in law is a fabulous hostess. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">5. </span>N</b>obody truly appreciates the details unless they recently had a wedding or plan on doing so in the near future. These individuals are the minority of your guests. Spend the largest chunks of cash on the photographer and the food/alcohol - and when I say alcohol, I mean QUANTITY, not quality.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E7fKyaMPdkg/Uhj4FmNIEOI/AAAAAAAABCE/ZYrJQ-RiUEg/s1600/paul&alexiswedding024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E7fKyaMPdkg/Uhj4FmNIEOI/AAAAAAAABCE/ZYrJQ-RiUEg/s400/paul&alexiswedding024.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I retrieved this window shutter from the garbage. I bought the green paint and spent two dollars on the place setting cards. I think the total for this project was $4? Something like that.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ET3XdJMUhbI/Uhj4HIPv-2I/AAAAAAAABCM/QkOh-FakC9M/s1600/paul&alexiswedding038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ET3XdJMUhbI/Uhj4HIPv-2I/AAAAAAAABCM/QkOh-FakC9M/s640/paul&alexiswedding038.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WdUfA5Nqpbc/Uhj4LRw0hjI/AAAAAAAABCU/mA7UruVzH9A/s1600/paul&alexiswedding388.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WdUfA5Nqpbc/Uhj4LRw0hjI/AAAAAAAABCU/mA7UruVzH9A/s640/paul&alexiswedding388.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Flameless votives were a precautionary choice with the drunkards and children running around. The wedding cake topper was found in a box of old junk in a barn, along with the mason jar.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xuq-VhYqDyQ/Uhj4On7koXI/AAAAAAAABCk/AVER2NwMC0M/s1600/paul&alexiswedding393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xuq-VhYqDyQ/Uhj4On7koXI/AAAAAAAABCk/AVER2NwMC0M/s400/paul&alexiswedding393.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So my entire wedding, including the ceremony cost me approximately $4000.00. And that is including my dress, accessories, the DJ, the photographer, and such.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had some advantages that most people don't have, such as a miracle working mom, a freelance cake decorator, and I am an antiques dealer as is my sister. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have a videographer because I would never watch the DVD. Who wants to see the ceremony countless times...I mean, get your uncle to do it. Professionals are insanely expensive.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In a few days I'll have part two up. :) </div>

I still have a lot of stuff to share, so this is one of two blog entries...All of these beautiful photographs were done by the most amazing photographer (reasonably priced and genuinely good people)<a href="http://www.twinklephoto.com/" target="_blank"> BIRDS OF A FEATHER PHOTOGRAPHY.</a></div>
<br />lexismonkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949924792237883654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400864612088181590.post-67932260618447902572013-03-19T11:51:00.004-04:002013-03-19T11:51:28.511-04:00Mad World - Indirectly I'm famous! Last night I received an order for a 1960's bedspread that I had listed in my Etsy shop for a few months. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-epXl1BDERqA/UUiF0j-3xfI/AAAAAAAABA4/4O66MSi5XfM/s1600/il_fullxfull.401103932_j4lu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-epXl1BDERqA/UUiF0j-3xfI/AAAAAAAABA4/4O66MSi5XfM/s320/il_fullxfull.401103932_j4lu.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The individual asked me to please express ship it (a very expensive procedure) and I was happy to comply. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L5Y_IjEsm-M/UUiIUQF2URI/AAAAAAAABBA/jhi4H5x2KEg/s1600/il_fullxfull.401104350_68cq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L5Y_IjEsm-M/UUiIUQF2URI/AAAAAAAABBA/jhi4H5x2KEg/s320/il_fullxfull.401104350_68cq.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Turns out the individual works as a set director for the Television Series "Mad Men"!<br />
<br />
Ack! My spread is going to be on television! Probably made into a fabulous outfit of some kind! I AM TOTALLY FAMOUS! Well, my bedspread is.<br />
<br />
A couple of months ago I received another order from yet another studio, this time it was for a 1940's WWII rayon pajama set. <br />
<br />
That individual worked on the set of "Bomb Girls" a TV show in Canada, (soon to be broadcasted in the USA!).<br />
<br />
I've also had someone ask permission to use my photograph in their book - but that was published in the United Kingdom, I never had the opportunity to check this one out.<br />
<br />
Several people who create costumes for plays have bought from me as well. I don't usually ask, but when an abnormal request for super expensive shipping occurs I have to search out of curiosity. As for shop updates, I added a bunch of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/lexismonkey?section_id=6341209" target="_blank">Feed Sacks and some fabrics</a>. I'm going to be adding stuff slowly, due to time constraints with my wedding on June first and working at the greenhouse again. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.veryfinevintage.com/" target="_blank">Fine vintage lingerie</a> will be updated as well, I have some great lingerie to post! <br />

I have added some 1940s (and older) fly fishing reels. They are fully functional and would be a great gift for someone who fishes or collects old fishing tackle. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/113485856/two-vintage-fly-fishing-wheels-south" target="_blank">Fly Fishing Reels </a><br />

I have mentioned this play suit before in my <a href="http://alexisvintage.blogspot.com/2009/07/i-never-thought.html#links" target="_blank">blog</a>. I have replaced all the elastic throughout the garment, reinforced seams, made it completely wearable again. I've had it in my closet for a long time and I haven't had the opportunity to wear it. <br />
Fashion usually recycles itself, and Pendleton is no exception. I adore their stuff, but there is no way I'm spending $178 on a blazer, no matter how lovely it may be.<br />
<br />
An affordable alternative is buying a vintage skirt suit and using both pieces in creative ways for example<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H4T0QLFbpAs/UDOYUxAbjsI/AAAAAAAAA80/7sV9VZKgE6o/s1600/topsterjacket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="219" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H4T0QLFbpAs/UDOYUxAbjsI/AAAAAAAAA80/7sV9VZKgE6o/s320/topsterjacket.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a great jacket. It has pockets, chunky buttons and most importantly it looks really comfortable. Sadly, I can't afford $178 for a jacket. Well, I could but I wouldn't be able to buy much else. Incoming vintage suits.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-silwMGiW7ok/UDOYctrwEEI/AAAAAAAAA9U/GX722mZuma0/s1600/blazer+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-silwMGiW7ok/UDOYctrwEEI/AAAAAAAAA9U/GX722mZuma0/s320/blazer+2.jpg" width="320" /></a>This is a 1960's blazer that comes with a skirt of the same material. <br />
If I replace the buttons with something more contemporary I have a beautifully tailored garment.<br />
The collar is a bit wider than the original, but if that bugs me I can have a professional tailor alter it for me.<br />
Grand total cost of Suit, Shipping, and Buttons might be $90 and I still get a fabulous skirt that I can wear with boots and tights, maybe a turtleneck or a sweater.<br />
<br />
Much like the Debbie Bias skirt it has a no band darted waist and would look fabulous on any figure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-08Xd06UTMvM/UDOYbHVsl-I/AAAAAAAAA9M/ZrEFCKiVOKU/s1600/Skirt+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-08Xd06UTMvM/UDOYbHVsl-I/AAAAAAAAA9M/ZrEFCKiVOKU/s320/Skirt+2.jpg" width="320" /> </a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gsslJVU0K7E/UDObAlhydrI/AAAAAAAAA9g/0zyFprWcBbg/s1600/debbie+bias+skirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gsslJVU0K7E/UDObAlhydrI/AAAAAAAAA9g/0zyFprWcBbg/s200/debbie+bias+skirt.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Pendleton 178 + 142 = $320<br />
Vintage $90 (with new buttons and shipping)<br />
Another Jacket I absolutely loved in the catalogue was the Debbie double breasted jacket.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AV_bWr2m4yE/UDOb-995ZII/AAAAAAAAA9w/uQ8PFkF6Y4M/s1600/debbie+double+breasted+jacket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AV_bWr2m4yE/UDOb-995ZII/AAAAAAAAA9w/uQ8PFkF6Y4M/s320/debbie+double+breasted+jacket.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
A price tag of $218<br />
Ack!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fox33taY8sc/UDOcexa0-fI/AAAAAAAAA94/GEmGR_skbwE/s1600/Blazer+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fox33taY8sc/UDOcexa0-fI/AAAAAAAAA94/GEmGR_skbwE/s320/Blazer+3.jpg" width="320" /></a>A beautiful blazer that is "vintage inspired"<br />
well, that means that one could find a 'true vintage' jacket and possibly save some cash.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is a true vintage <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/79829308/vintage-blazer-from-utah-tailoring-mills?image_id=264091553" target="_blank">1960s blazer</a>, with shipping it is $53<br />
<br />
Again, adding decorative buttons wouldn't be difficult. This attaches with snaps and sewing on 8 buttons wouldn't be a huge ordeal. <br />
<br />
New: $218<br />
Vintage: $53<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTMmI8vYw94/UDOfI6Q7SJI/AAAAAAAAA-E/5PTJ3O-rHxg/s1600/Suit+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTMmI8vYw94/UDOfI6Q7SJI/AAAAAAAAA-E/5PTJ3O-rHxg/s320/Suit+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/67392977/vintage-womens-skirt-suit-in-wool-brown" target="_blank">Another two</a> piece set $63<br />
<br />
- A-line skirt<br />
- Tailored jacket<br />
- Quality construction<br />
-Very Reasonable price<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So vintage is the way to go, at least in my opinion. The stuff is better quality and you are far less likely to show up at work wearing the same thing as someone else.<br />

For example if you look up "Wedding Centerpieces" and the attached price tags, you will pay at least double what you would if you just looked up "milk glass vase" or "Mason Jar"<br />
<br />
I loved the idea of incorporating tons of antiques and vintage items in my wedding centerpieces and I am extremely fortunate that my sister and I have been collectors of antiques and collectible vintage for years. I feel for the brides that have to go out and start their collections from scratch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://greenweddingshoes.com/rustic-vintage-wedding-ideas/" target="_blank">Here </a>are some great wedding centerpiece ideas and my personal favorites are below. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pJwoa1_FUGk/UDJZGZvVdHI/AAAAAAAAA8A/W8s4q31L_3c/s1600/lace-doily-wedding-ideas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pJwoa1_FUGk/UDJZGZvVdHI/AAAAAAAAA8A/W8s4q31L_3c/s320/lace-doily-wedding-ideas.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One other thing I have an excess of is doilies. Dear god, you would be able to cover every dresser, end table and surface of my neighborhood with my doily stash. Its seriously ridiculous. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YP7WeTacJ6c/UDJZGpAsLVI/AAAAAAAAA8I/sBrJPwQGB84/s1600/pink-peony-wedding-centerpieces.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YP7WeTacJ6c/UDJZGpAsLVI/AAAAAAAAA8I/sBrJPwQGB84/s320/pink-peony-wedding-centerpieces.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I mean, it is OUR wedding so we need to mesh our personal hobbies into the decor somehow I'm guessing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uzYaECBYBxo/UDJZHLlijmI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/3u3wAIurk3g/s1600/vintage-wedding-centerpieces.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uzYaECBYBxo/UDJZHLlijmI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/3u3wAIurk3g/s320/vintage-wedding-centerpieces.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I planned on incorporating books in my centerpieces due to my voracious
appetite for reading, and perhaps throwing some fishing-related items
for Paul's hobby. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sJ7_5YxSc7k/UDJZVRsHeaI/AAAAAAAAA8g/QEIod0gfecA/s1600/elliegrover-wedding-17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sJ7_5YxSc7k/UDJZVRsHeaI/AAAAAAAAA8g/QEIod0gfecA/s320/elliegrover-wedding-17.jpg" width="254" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What caught my eye in this duo was the mason jars. See the rest of the wedding <a href="http://greenweddingshoes.com/a-woodsy-bohemian-wedding-brooke-jason/" target="_blank">here</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Thanks to the intarWeb I have tons of inspirational photos to guide me along. <br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Things I have decided I am NOT DOING:</b><br />
1. <u> giving out really tacky and useless favors.</u> I'm thinking either a candy bar or something useful like a <a href="http://www.favoronline.net/measuringtapekeychain-1-1.aspx" target="_blank">tape measure keychain</a>. I've had one on my keyring for several years now and it is most useful!<br />
2. <u>Save the dates.</u><br />
Postage + Stationary + what if I change my mind and the guest list changes?<br />
3. <u>Florist Costs are going to be minimized</u><br />
Instead, I am making my own <a href="http://www.save-on-crafts.com/cormakbas.html" target="_blank">corsages </a>and <a href="http://www.intimateweddings.com/blog/8-diy-boutonniere-tutorials/" target="_blank">boutonnieres</a><br />
I'm making my own centerpieces (see above) and picking flowers from my garden. My sister owns a <a href="http://www.rosedalegrowers.com/" target="_blank">greenhouse </a>so that is completely feasible for my wedding. I'm kind of out of luck as far as a bridal bouquet goes. Everyone hated the brooch bouquet idea so I am seriously outvoted. <br />
4. <u>Engagement Pictures</u><br />
Seriously, these are totally unnecessary. If a couple doesn't have photos of themselves doing fun stuff together they need to be engaged longer and do more fun crap together. Paul and I have HUNDREDS from over the last couple years! Staged photos never look as good as the real thing anyway.<br />
<br />
The hardest part is finding a reception location that we really
love. you can't rely on the weather to be nice so we are trying to find
a happy medium in our price range. Our budget is $8000.00 (good luck
to me right?)<br />
<br />
<br />
I could increase the budget but I absolutely will not. Weddings
are totally blown out of proportion nowadays and there is no way I am
going to put up with these over commercialized "wedding necessities". Its just stupid. Paul and I are absolutely vehement about spending more then we have too. Its just a party and a dress (Which coincidentally I have already purchased along with a veil so our budget is now 7500)<br />
<br />
Updates will be forthcoming!lexismonkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949924792237883654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400864612088181590.post-74468335091300317502012-08-19T18:32:00.004-04:002012-08-19T18:33:52.452-04:00Fine Vintage Apparel and Fine Vintage Lingerie Updates 8/19/2012<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

June 1, 2013<br />
<br />
yep. 34 years old and I'm finally biting the bullet and getting married. <br />
<br />
Its scary shit. Pardon my expression but I'm not sure how else to say it. <br />
<br />
I've been trolling wedding boards looking for pre-owned stuff, and I decided my theme is most definitely "Flea Market Wedding" with a whole mess of DIY mixed in. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://ruffledblog.com/diy-ideas/" target="_blank">Ruffled </a>Blog has cute ideas, so does <a href="http://pinterest.com/paperwhites/flea-market-wedding-inspiration/" target="_blank">pinterest </a><br />
<br />
I have an extremely limited budget, however, this should be a challenge if nothing else.<br />
<br />
The cost is obviously with the food/caterer. Feeding 140 people is no small challenge. I just don't have the space/time/patience to try to do that myself. <br />
<br />
this week we are going on a vacation, thank god. It gives me time to really think about how i'm going to do this whole "Wedding for under $7400"<br />
<br />
I don't know how some people do it, unless you KNOW and are related to photographers, DJ's and caterers, this crap is pricy.<br />
<br />
I kind of wish I could take my own pictures. <br />
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5XmDnXBCtXo/T6KnX4rccAI/AAAAAAAAA1s/DDlNHPEyLk0/s1600/P2039392.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5XmDnXBCtXo/T6KnX4rccAI/AAAAAAAAA1s/DDlNHPEyLk0/s320/P2039392.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
For Christmas, my future brother in law gave me an authentic 1947 Sears Catalog. Needless to say this was my absolute favorite gift next to the AUTHENTIC vintage pound puppy my sister got me.<br />
<br />
After staring lustfully at shoes for an hour, then dresses for another hour...I came across the lingerie portion.<br />
<br />
The materials are mainly rayon. of course, this was rationing and even in the United States textiles were used towards the war effort rather than frivolity. Women needed their underwear however, and who doesn't love rayon?<br />
And the definitions changed slightly:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZZIEwdL9odA/T6KoY1FXBjI/AAAAAAAAA10/ByQ0i4CpGd4/s1600/P2039371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZZIEwdL9odA/T6KoY1FXBjI/AAAAAAAAA10/ByQ0i4CpGd4/s400/P2039371.JPG" width="248" /></a></div>
A. The model is wearing a "band leg brief"<br />
B. Picture to the center left is a "panty"<br />
C. Picture next to it is a "step-in panty"<br />
<br />
The lower right hand corner are "lacy leg flare panties" and they make lovely gifts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBinSkTGplY/T6KpYn52hrI/AAAAAAAAA18/FvAKqVw0-bA/s1600/P2039372.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBinSkTGplY/T6KpYn52hrI/AAAAAAAAA18/FvAKqVw0-bA/s200/P2039372.JPG" width="136" /></a></div>
Now, on the opposite page, the model is also wearing band legged briefs. (picture B.)<br />
The top is a "vest" (picture A)<br />
Picture C. top right hand side is a flare leg panty<br />
Picture D. Band Leg Brief in the middle of the page<br />
Picture E. are Bloomers<br />
<br />
there weren't many 'bloomers' in this edition of the 1947 Sears catalog. I believe they were being phased out by this time, but there were likely some old timers that kept them in demand. As I <a href="http://alexisvintage.blogspot.com/2012/02/step-ins-tap-pants-underpants-panties.html?spref=bl" target="_blank">stated before</a> BLOOMERS - have elastic at waist and knee, and a closed crotch design. Obviously by 1947 there weren't any open crotch drawers to be had.<br />
<br />
So the evidence is inconclusive until I get more catalog images. I'm thinking though, these definitions changed from decade to decade.<br />
<br />

So I am uploading more photos of this catalog on my flickr account. I also have intentions of uploading a few photos of the 1922 catalog. Some thoughts...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been doing some research in my free time on the social significance of underwear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Loin Cloths are the most ancient form of underwear, and archaeological evidence shows some interesting evidence regarding the male side of the underpants equation, however, I'm going to take a looksie at the last 120 years and women's underwear specifically.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First of all, in the late 1800's, early 1900's... only a prostitute would wear closed crotch drawers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A proper lady would never be caught dead in closed crotch underwear. They felt this would inhibit the flow of beneficial air around the genital area. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
By the 1920s (as seen in the advertisements from this really great Charles Williams Stores catalog I borrowed from my future brother-in-law) there was the option for closed or open drawers. It appears that it was becoming a preference rather than a social taboo for women to wear closed crotch drawers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9anBCknN_8/ToH3WVzNM6I/AAAAAAAAAzw/Z2KGZAgvcEQ/s1600/Circular+Drawers+-+1922+Catalogue+-+Open+Or+closed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9anBCknN_8/ToH3WVzNM6I/AAAAAAAAAzw/Z2KGZAgvcEQ/s200/Circular+Drawers+-+1922+Catalogue+-+Open+Or+closed.jpg" width="107" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
"circular drawers" come in both open and closed styles.<br />
<br />
"Excellent quality. White Nainsook Circular Drawers. Wide legs edged with white embroidery and top adjusted with tape cut comfortably wide. Sizes 23 to 29 side length.<br />
Give SIDE LENGTH."<br />
<br />
<br />
Nainsook is a soft fine woven muslin fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uj_IMKaZFVw/ToH3WznTY7I/AAAAAAAAAz0/a0o-YNDWcGQ/s1600/Closed+Only.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uj_IMKaZFVw/ToH3WznTY7I/AAAAAAAAAz0/a0o-YNDWcGQ/s200/Closed+Only.jpg" width="130" /></a></div>
These state "Closed Style Only"<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now, the question that has been plaguing me....whats the difference between BLOOMERS, STEP-IN'S, and DRAWERS?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H45Su74RrL4/ToH3az0PggI/AAAAAAAAAz8/dIp6QYg5yeY/s1600/plethora+of+drawers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="329" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H45Su74RrL4/ToH3az0PggI/AAAAAAAAAz8/dIp6QYg5yeY/s640/plethora+of+drawers.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L_5UGWNObmg/ToH1LGXy6-I/AAAAAAAAAzo/8rizDKa2528/s1600/Tap+Panties2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
from the left we have: 1 Crepe bloomers, 2 'hand embroidered drawers, 3 silk crepe de chine step in bloomers, 4 step in drawers, 5 sateen bloomers, 6 white cambric drawers.<br />
<br />
1 bloomers made of crepe have elastic at the knees and the waistband, only come in closed styles<br />
2 drawers elastic seams at knee and waist. only come in closed styles<br />
3 bloomers elastic at knee and waist and are only closed style<br />
4 step in drawers have no elastic at leg holes but an elastic top<br />
5 bloomers elastic at both knee and waist and closed style only<br />
6 drawers have no closed/open option and the band is a drawstring<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--r2x7XDbHkI/ToH3Vg-ZMlI/AAAAAAAAAzs/tsFeyCnV1Zg/s640/plethora+of+drawers+1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="640" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
from the left: 1 Nainsook Bloomers, 2 White Cambric Drawers 3 Step in Bloomers 4 Nainsook Bloomers 5 Silk Crepe de Chine Step-In Bloomers<br />
<br />
Nainsook Bloomers: Elastic at waist and knee/closed only<br />
Cambric Drawers: Drawstring Waist, Open/Closed styles,<br />
Batiste Step in bloomers: Elastic at top <br />
Nainsook bloomers elastic at knee and waist, closed only<br />
Step in bloomers have elastic at top<br />
<br />
<br />
SO...what the hell is going on?<br />
I actually needed a chart:<br />

BLOOMERS - have elastic at waist and knee, closed crotch design<br />
DRAWERS - Can have elastic seaming, but no elastic. Uses TIES. Can come in both closed and open styles, however as of 1923 closed was more popular.<br />
STEP IN DRAWERS - I believe this is a style, for those who preferred the long drawers without elastic at the knee<br />
<br />
<br />
Drawers in late 19th century women's undergarments are essentially an undergarment constructed of two leg tubes attached to a waistband. There was no crotch, the only place the legs were joined were the waistband.<br />

<br />
Despite the manufactured trims, it is difficult to do to say the least. It requires a lot of planning, measuring, obscure sewing machine manipulations and so on. <br />
<br />
Needless to say, I've attempted and failed miserably. I just don't have the patience. I LOVE the results however.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zaMFoskEk5k/TanMcwieUDI/AAAAAAAAAy4/3xgtFyrt4YA/s1600/P4107573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="169" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zaMFoskEk5k/TanMcwieUDI/AAAAAAAAAy4/3xgtFyrt4YA/s200/P4107573.JPG" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xJWDmSPzfjg/TZ9UovoohqI/AAAAAAAAAyk/anOsLvdAec4/s1600/lily-of-the-valley-arrangement.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br />
</a></div> This is an example from a heirloom quilt my grandmother was making and for some reason decided against finishing. The ribbon and eyelet lace is referred to as 'beading lace'. Its specifically made for ribbon to be woven into it and sewn from there. Quite a nice effect - though the manufactured trim is quite pricey! Many of the trims exceed $4 per yard! Because I've inherited a majority of the trims in my shop, most of it is less than a dollar a yard. <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/lexismonkey?section_id=6341209&ga_search_query=lingerie&ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5463773">Snatch it up! </a><br />

The lace is appliqued and is simply sewn directly upon the fabric. in lingerie behind the lace is usually left open adding a tantalizing glimpse of flesh.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q-m5cLQe58I/TanMg3vPf2I/AAAAAAAAAzA/2w53Qym0FDo/s1600/P4107570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q-m5cLQe58I/TanMg3vPf2I/AAAAAAAAAzA/2w53Qym0FDo/s200/P4107570.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>Here embroidery, beading lace, appliqued lace are combined for a rather pretty effect. the embroidery was done by machine, cutting down the time it would take by many hours.<br />

While these are few, there are countless other combination used in heirloom sewing, tucking, shirring, embroidery, beading, and such. <br />
<br />
I've put many different varieties of heirloom sewing supplies up in my shop.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/72027757/vintage-trim-white-insertion-eyelet">Beading </a>Lace, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/71761558/vintage-trim-cotton-lace-1-inch-wide-2">Insertion </a>Lace, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/71761302/vintage-trim-1-18-yards-of-entredeux">Entredeux</a>, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/71903374/vintage-applique-lace-trim-scalloped">Applique</a>, and much more. <br />
<br />
Lingerie, even that which is manufactured, has these techniques applied to them frequently.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6t76J0vjmMI/TanPd93MUwI/AAAAAAAAAzE/XDTyuumk7KI/s1600/il_fullxfull.128611043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6t76J0vjmMI/TanPd93MUwI/AAAAAAAAAzE/XDTyuumk7KI/s200/il_fullxfull.128611043.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/42223649/vintage-sears-nightgown-with-tags-size">This robe </a>features insertion lace, chiffon insertions, lace insertions for example. <br />
<a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/51451830/vintage-full-slip-with-pleats-and-lace">This slip has tons of insertion lace.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If I had more time, I would love to practice and learn these techniques. Alas, between my new vintage lingerie store, my vintage apparel store, a part time job at a nursery, AND being a full time college student, I can't find the time. <br />
<br />
Fine Vintage Lingerie is now officially open! http://www.veryfinevintage.com<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Yep. The reason I don't wear cloche hats, no matter how awesome I look in them, or how cute they are, is <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101050/">Blossom</a>.<br />
<br />
I don't blame Mayim Bialik personally, I mean, the early 90's aren't her fault. <br />
She actually looked really cute in the hats and the outfits...she was inspiring as a fashion icon, to teenage girls anyway.<br />
<br />
The dolls are horrible though. They aren't as bad as the <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/S6AohPMSZNI/AAAAAAAAAhg/KXeDk6j3BuY/s1600-h/P3112619.JPG">Nanny</a> dolls that were produced-still they are horrendous. <br />
<br />
Apparently Mayim Bialik is a stellar mother and has some unique <a href="http://www.holisticmoms.org/">childrearing techniques</a> on top of it all she is a neuroscientist. Amazing woman, very inspiring. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ECWoKzMDClo/TXPYXK8aiQI/AAAAAAAAAyU/jt0zvQ-FDV0/s1600/blossom.3.-360x270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ECWoKzMDClo/TXPYXK8aiQI/AAAAAAAAAyU/jt0zvQ-FDV0/s200/blossom.3.-360x270.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br />
Still, I can't let the image of the television show out of my head. <br />
I think it was the character Joey that was most annoying, maybe that is why I can't wear the hats? <br />
<br />
She was much cooler than <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarissa_Explains_It_All">Clarissa</a> mostly because she wasn't the stereotypical blue-eyed blonde and she had style. It was comforting that a really cool girl could be a brunette with a big nose. I think I was 13 when the show was popular, so I was feeling quite awkward at the time. I could relate to her.<br />

Sure, the snow is great for the first couple hours. Kids get excited because there is the promise of sledding/school cancellations/snow people building, you know....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxeJCiGN_I/AAAAAAAAAx0/Vmmw4Yu_uRg/s1600/snow.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxeJCiGN_I/AAAAAAAAAx0/Vmmw4Yu_uRg/s400/snow.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>Yea, my alley is a winter wonderland - gah.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxk1ic0LuI/AAAAAAAAAx4/O63tYFn035U/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>The first snowstorm wasn't so bad. I shoveled / scraped and so on and it was kind of like this 'novelty'<br />
<br />
the ice storm a few days later - well...not so accepting.<br />
<br />
Yep. <br />
<br />
The other morning I had my car stuck for 45 minutes. Seriously.<br />
<br />
Regardless, it was while I was attempting to chip away the ice around my tires/salting/attempting to move my car when my neighbor came outside, pretended not to see me, (from 15 feet away) started her car, and went back inside. Ten minutes later, she backed up her car and left. <br />
<br />
Now I'm all about helping people if they need it. Paul and I ALWAYS try to help people who are stuck, older folks who are shoveling, we at LEAST offer our assistance. My neighbor could have asked me if I needed help, I would of gratefully refused because it wasn't a matter of needing help, just waiting for the ice melt do its job. <br />
<br />
We are socialized to help others, cooperate, you know, everything you learn on Sesame Street! Simple concept, if you are capable, you try to help other people! <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxk1ic0LuI/AAAAAAAAAx4/O63tYFn035U/s1600/photo.JPG" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxk1ic0LuI/AAAAAAAAAx4/O63tYFn035U/s320/photo.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Of course, winter can be very pretty</td></tr>
</tbody></table>For example, driving home from school yesterday, this woman must have slid on the ice and her car was absolutely completely stuck in a snow bank. I believe 3 different cars were stopped and attempting to help her. None really could offer any constructive help, due to the lack of snow shovels, but I’m sure the attempt was appreciated. <br />
<br />
My neighbor was kind enough to help me break up the ice on my sidewalk out front of my house this past week, I will be sure to repay the favor next time it snows. I shoveled my other neighbors front walk last snowstorm, its just a mutually beneficial relationship that involves helping out.<br />
<br />
We are social creatures. We are told from a very young age to cooperate and offer help to those in need, is a very good thing.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxk7jtDeDI/AAAAAAAAAx8/e5PNpfipyTs/s1600/photo%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TUxk7jtDeDI/AAAAAAAAAx8/e5PNpfipyTs/s320/photo%25282%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ice on my rhododendron.</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<br />
I am not saying, of course, that it is an instinct, or biological thing, coded into our DNA. There are rewards for helping other people. Whether it be social acceptance, admiration, or our own good feelings that improve our sense of self.<br />
<br />
<br />
It just surprised me completely, that my neighbor actually pretended not to see me struggling. I live right next door? I mean, a complete stranger wouldn't surprise me after this <a href="http://alexisvintage.blogspot.com/2010/07/camping-worst-weekend-of-my-life.html">past summer's experience</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
I like to keep a positive outlook and think that people are mostly good, I mean, there is no such thing as an innately bad person. Just oblivious people, and the mentally ill. <br />
<br />
Regardless, not everyone is a dickhead.<br />
<br />
So, this week in my shop I added three WOOL suits. <br />

I have a couple books that I highly recommend to anyone interested in the history and society surrounding fashion.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0JAu2n9PI/AAAAAAAAAwo/FitMh5T2hTM/s1600/photo%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0JAu2n9PI/AAAAAAAAAwo/FitMh5T2hTM/s200/photo%25282%2529.JPG" width="149" /></a></div> James Laver Costume and Fashion<br />
I have a much older edition, regardless, from ancient history until the early 1980's clothing is discussed with some regard to historical and social events. Not my favorite book, its not so much concerned with the last 75 years or so, but to be fair, the topic is so broad and encompassing it would be really hard to write an all inclusive book without it being 3000+ pages. A worthwhile read if you are interested in historical progression of fashion however.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0JBooObXI/AAAAAAAAAws/EA4nGOg9Sjk/s1600/photo%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0JBooObXI/AAAAAAAAAws/EA4nGOg9Sjk/s200/photo%25283%2529.JPG" width="149" /></a></div> An Intimate Affair: Women, lingerie and sexuality by Jill Fields<br />
The Lingerie Handbook by Rebecca Apsan <br />
The Handbook offers some awesome tips for shopping for lingerie and fitting correctly. Great little book.<br />
An Intimate Affair is written by a historian, Jill Fields, and is my favorite lingerie book ever. Its fabulous because she discusses everything in context and includes major historical events and social facts. Wonderful book. <br />
<br />

A visual history of lingerie if you will.<br />
Bra: a thousand years of style, support and seduction is a really quick summary of the last thousand years of bras. <br />

They aren't super-helpful, but kind of quirky and fun to have.<br />

There are beautiful images in this book. This isn't merely a picture book of really cute shoes, but there is tons of extremely useful historical knowledge and speculation including designer biographies. For example, the Edwardian heel was invented by Nicholas Lestage in 1660 and popularized by Louis XV...<br />
All in all, this is a fabulous book. Most of the shoes are designer shoes that are (even in vintage) fairly pricey, but the knockoffs produced at the same time aren't as pricey and widely available. <br />

Fabric Reference by Mary Humphries<br />
This is a college level textbook that gives you all kinds of technical information regarding textiles and manufacturing them. She also goes through cleaning techniques and in depth examination of dry cleaning methods. All in all this is more of a technical manual but buying an older edition is worth your while.<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0N8c1wZfI/AAAAAAAAAw8/N95HrljiVJE/s1600/handbags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TS0N8c1wZfI/AAAAAAAAAw8/N95HrljiVJE/s200/handbags.jpg" width="153" /></a></div>Roseann Ettinger has been mentioned before on my blog, she is a fabulous reference. Any of her books are great for the vintage collector or enthusiast. I have the first edition of "Handbags" and I love it! She has a lot of details and facts along with fabulous ads and pictures of the bags being discussed. Company information is abound as well. The price guide in my book is just silly as it was published in 1991, and in general I scoff at price guides. <span style="color: purple;"><b>Something is only worth what the customer is willing to pay for it. </b> </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In conclusion, there are other books I have read that pertain to vintage and such, but for the most part I stick to the social-historical-dry tomes of information that most of the general public dislikes. <br />
<br />
If you have any suggestions, please post them in comments! Arthur and I were taking a walk and there it was...<br />
<br />
This dresser caught my eye due to the art-deco like look of it and the sleek smooth lines. no sharp edges, all just flowing and lovely. <br />
<br />
It now has a place of honor in my stockroom. I can always find stuff to put in a dresser, and the drawers are large and awesome.<br />

I had a wedding this past weekend, (yay!) and a chance to dress up finally!<br />
I wore my favorite dress ever. I purchased this dress about a year or so ago at "Remember When" in Hazelton. <br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TNHgjfoXm9I/AAAAAAAAAvU/VPjvb-9T-hE/s1600/Back.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TNHgjfoXm9I/AAAAAAAAAvU/VPjvb-9T-hE/s200/Back.jpg" width="184" /></a><br />
The rad as hell shoes? Authentic 1940s opentoe suede pumps. I got those on Etsy. Pardon the expression on my face, Paul isn't very good with timing a photo and I think I was getting lipstick off my teeth..<br />
<br />
The dress is perfect, and it is comfortable! There is a fabulous peplum, rutched waist amongst other details that make me wish I owned a closet full of nothing but 1940's clothing. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdibwcoofeg">This hair tutorial</a> saved me so much time! I just skipped the last part and I was good to go. <a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/"> She has a blog as well</a> with tons of tutorials.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TNHjYPrfmoI/AAAAAAAAAvY/LfKy4WcYlsQ/s1600/PA255406.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MbzwxUB7x9w/TNHjYPrfmoI/AAAAAAAAAvY/LfKy4WcYlsQ/s200/PA255406.JPG" width="200" /></a></div> I was going through my shoes, and I found these beautiful suede (maroon) spring-o-lators. I'm contemplating selling them. I don't really know if I can seperate myself from them...but I haven't worn them at all yet.<br />
<br />
They are fabulous, but a little too big for me. (Size 9 and I'm an 8 1/2)<br />
